Restore Your Smile With Dental Implants in Mississauga

Helping patients restore their smile with dental implants

Advances in dental technology have made it possible to permanently replace a missing tooth (or teeth) using a special type of prosthesis known as a dental implant. Unlike dentures or dental bridges, dental implants are fused to the patient’s jaw; as a result, they look, feel, and function just like natural teeth.

For people who have been living with tooth loss, dental implants can significantly improve their quality of life. This tooth replacement option allows patients to eat, smile, laugh, and speak exactly like they did when they had their natural teeth. This freedom creates renewed confidence and permits the patient to eat a more varied and nutritious diet, leading to better overall health. They also prevent tooth shifting and bone loss, preserving the patient’s facial structure and appearance.

can Dental implants are an excellent choice for patients with the following goals:
– You’re looking for a permanent solution to tooth loss (most implants last a lifetime).
– You want to replace a missing tooth or teeth without altering your other teeth.
– You want a dental restoration that’s indistinguishable from your natural teeth in both appearance and function.
– You want to prevent premature facial sagging as a result of tooth loss.
– You want a “hassle-free” solution for missing teeth (unlike dentures, these don’t require cleaning or replacement).

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial teeth comprised of a metal (usually titanium) tooth root and a prosthetic tooth. The root portion of the dental implant naturally fuses to the patient’s jawbone after implantation, creating a strong, secure “base” for the prosthetic tooth. Unlike dental bridges, they do not require the placement of crowns on surrounding teeth, making this procedure minimally invasive.

Types of implants

There are three main types of dental implants designed to address specific patient needs and oral conditions:
Endosteal Implants
This is the simplest and most common type of dental implant. Endosteal Implants consist of a tiny titanium post that is surgically inserted in the patient’s jawbone, allowed to heal, then attached to a prosthetic tooth. (Alternatively, in patients with multiple missing teeth, a dental bridge or denture may be attached to multiple metal posts.) To be a good candidate for this type of implant, patients must have a strong, healthy jawbone.
Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal Implants are designed for patients who lack the jawbone structure needed to support a traditional Endosteal Implant. This type of implant is attached to a metal framework inserted on top of the jawbone and below the periosteum (the layer of connective tissues above the jawbone) rather than titanium posts.

Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic Implants are a new (and complex) type of dental implant that’s anchored to the cheekbone instead of the jawbone. They allow patients with severe bone loss in their upper jaw to receive implants without needing to undergo extensive bone grafts or sinus lifts, significantly reducing overall treatment time.

the Process of Getting Dental Implants

The process of getting dental implants varies depending on the patient’s jaw structure and the type of implant they are getting. However, for the most common type of implants, the process is as follows:

1. Dr. Dalmao will first thoroughly examine your mouth and take x-rays of your head, jaw and teeth to assess the health of your jaw and tissues. If dental implants are right for you, you will then be able to schedule a date for your surgery.

2. During the initial surgery, your mouth will be thoroughly numbed with a powerful local anesthetic to prevent discomfort. Then, Dr. Dalmao will insert a tiny metal post (or posts) into your jawbone and stitch the gum tissue closed, covering the area. You will then be sent home with aftercare instructions.

3.  After your jaw and gum tissue have fully bonded with the post (a process that often takes several months), you will return to our office for the second stage of surgery. Dr. Dalmao will carefully reopen the gum flap and attach an abutment post to the support post. This abutment post provides support for the prosthetic tooth and attaches it to the implant. Generally, the gums are allowed to heal for two weeks after the abutment is placed.

4. During your final appointment, a custom artificial replacement tooth will be created to match the colour and shape of your natural teeth and attached to the abutment. (Or, if you’re having multiple teeth replaced, a fixed dental bridge or denture will be anchored to posts spanning the gap created by the missing teeth.)

Before & After

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Most people who are missing a tooth (or teeth) are suitable candidates for dental implants, provided they’re healthy enough to undergo routine dental surgery.

2. How long do implants last?

With proper care, they should last at least 15 years and, in many cases, a lifetime. Dental implants have an overall success rate of 98%.

3. How will I feel after dental implant surgery?

Many patients are surprised to discover that dental implant surgery typically causes minimal discomfort. After your procedure, you may notice some mild swelling and soreness, but these symptoms should resolve within a week as long as you follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions.

4. How should I care for my dental implants?

Care for your implants as you would care for your natural teeth; i.e., by brushing and flossing daily and having regular dental checkups. Though dental implants are artificial, proper oral care is required to prevent the development of gum disease (gingivitis), which can harm the implants over time. People with dental implants are also strongly advised to avoid smoking, as smoking can damage the gum tissue around the implant.

5. Can I still get dental implants if I have dentures?

Yes, absolutely. As long as you’re in good health, you can get implants at any age, and options exist to help patients with full or partial dentures. Dental implants can support a full or partial fixed denture or a removable denture that does not move when you chew or speak (eliminating the need for denture adhesives). Both options allow patients to eat a wider variety of foods and smile more confidently.
